BPHS for Free
The BPHS is now free to all and rebranded as the BPEX Pig Health Scheme. The scheme allows pig producers to have regular post-mortem health checks carried out by a specialist pig vet at the abattoir on whole consignments of pigs. This information can be extremely useful as a managmeent tool for assessing overall herd health, monitoring the effect of management changes on health or for identifying sub-clinical disease.
To receive this informatin for free, however, there is a little bit of work involved. You must be Red Tractor assured and registered with the National Pig Health Improvement Project. Members of the three regional health schemes (East Midlands Pig Health, Yorkshire and Humberside Health and Eastern Pig Health) are automatically eligible, but must update their biosecurity audit and vet survey. Your vet should discuss this with you at a forthcoming visit, but if they forget give them a nudge or call us at Garth!
